Raved for the enthralling climb and meticulous natural trails to the peak, the Kyajo Ri Peak Climbing garners interest from the most adventurous of the travelers. Although lesser known, the peak is surrounded by beautiful peaks and the serene Gokyo Lakes; making the journey one to cherish. The Government of Nepal opened Kyajo Ri for scaling only in 2002 and hence it is a relatively unexplored peak. The peak, which is situated at a height of 6186 meters above the sea level takes around 16 days to scale, is the highest peak on the Southern part of Khumbu Himal Ridge that runs north of Namche Bazar, the famous trade hub of the Everest region. The trek prior to the peak climbing also explores the home of the Sherpas, their culture, traditions, and captivating religious faith. This peak falls under the Mahalangur Himal Range and is bound to push the Mountaineers and test their perseverance. Climbing this peak is no small feat and demands full respect and adequate preparation from the climbers.

The trip starts with a scenic and nerve-racking flight to Lukla airport which is at a height of 2,840 meters above the sea level in the Everest region. From then on, the climbers will trek to Phakding making their way to Namche Bazaar. The climbers will spend a day at Namche Bazaar and acclimatize there as they prepare for the ascent of Kyajo Ri peak. From Namche, it is a trek to the villages of Thame and Mende. The trek heads to the base camp of this majestic peak which is in a beautiful isolated valley. The base camp is situated at a height of around 4550 meters above the sea level. The climbers spend a day in the base camp acclimatizing and preparing to scale the mountain. The climb takes flight with an initial climb to the Base I which is at a height of 5350 meters. One more day of acclimatizing at this point and a further ascend to Base II at 5700 meters. After a day’s rest here, it is the final hurdle as the climbers climb up to the summit of this beautiful mountain and make their way back to Base I on the same day. During this trip, a contingency day is reserved for unexpected circumstances. Finally, it is a trek back to Namche and then to Lukla.

This climb is a significant technical climb which requires climbers to be in great physical shape. It is a combination of moderate rock climbing and steep alpine ice climbing. The typical approach via the southwest ridge requires two more base camps above the main base camp. Furthermore, the summit day can be very tiring. Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a real possibility on this climb. It can start from an altitude of 3000 meters above the sea level and might be caused by low pressure, low oxygen, and rapid ascent amongst other factors. It is advisable to consult your doctor and carry necessary medications before the trip. The best times to climb this peak is either during autumn (Sept-Nov) or spring (March-May).
