Overview of Mt. Lhotse Expedition
The fourth highest mountain in the world, Lhotse(8516m) is situated in the Everest region.The exact meaning of Lhotse in Tibetan language is ‘South Peak’. Apart from the main summit of Lhotse 8516m, there are two other smaller peaks named: Lhotse shar 8383m, and Lhotse middle(east) 8414m. Lhotse is situated on the boarder of Tibet(China) and the Khumbu region of Nepal.The main summit of Lhotse was first climbed on May 18,1956 by the Swiss team of Ernst Reiss and Fritz Luchsinger from the Swiss mount Everest/ Lhotse expedition through the west face. Lhotse is connected to Mount Everest via south col. Mt. Lhotse is famous in the world for its remarkable and dramatic south face, which is known as the steepest face in the world that rises 3.2km within 2.25 km horizontal distance. The slandard climbing route on Mt. Lhotse follows via Everest’s south col.route upto the yellow band beyond camp lll.
